When Gaius Julius Caesar launched his first expedition from Gaul to the British Isles in 55 BCE, the soldiers of the Legio VII and Legio X found that while the open sandals that they were used to wearing without socks (caligae sine socks) were well-suited to marching in Mediterranean climates, the colder, wetter climate further North meant that warmer footwear would be needed.

The first solution was to simply add a layer of woollen socks, but the new arrangement of sandals with socks (caligae ♥♥♥ socks) sadly still proved to be insufficient for the task, with many legionaries complaining of chafed, crusty feet after their long ♥♥♥ sock marches through hostile territory.

By the end of the second century CE, caligae ♥♥♥ socks had been largely abandoned in favour of the sturdier closed boots (carbatinae).

Yet to this day, the usage of ♥♥♥ socks has remained a popular comfort to many across Europe and beyond, especially on cold, wet, and lonely nights.
