are you planing to never spend a dime?because then shadowverse is better
are you aiming to spend a billion dollars to become famous and become the very best streamer?heartstone
are you aiming to have fun?shadowverse
The only reason to play sv over hs right now is anime aesthetics, lesser amount of random effects and f2p.. kinda.
I mean someone that play sv and play 80% haven+sword probely going to no feel that shadow and dragon is oppressive in the metta right now even thought they are and if heartstone atleast gave everyone 1 random/picked quest so that even f2p players could get chance to try them out and such id probely put heartstone on bit more fun level then shadowverse but as you get almost nothing at all from starting that game while you get quite a bit as a compleatly new player i find that you can get more fun out of shadowverse then heartstone esp if you plan to play with friends since in sv you can also use the take 2/reverse take 2 modes in private matches while in heartstone if your new and plan to play with friends they will dominate you 90% of time unless you spend cash
Positive for Hearthstone :
- very good production value : the interface is clear, the effects are detailed but don't over-saturate the screen, the voice-acting is good, there are varied and beautiful battlefields, etc, etc...In comparison, Shadowverse is not that bad, but it just hasn't the same level of polish. In short, HS is prettier.
- Tavern Brawl : a special mode that changes every week with a new set of rules. It's new free content every week, and yes, you could argue, some brawls came back a couple times, some where terrible, and there is the infamous "Heroic Tavern Brawl" that is just another level of greed from Blizzard, but Shadowverse has nothing comparable.
Positive for Shadowverse :
- best economical model by FAR. Cygames gives a LOT of free stuff, by starting your account, but also on the long run, with promotions, and generous dailies. Frankly, SV is economically better in every aspect : for a F2P, but also for a collector, or just when comparing pack value regarding to their cost. Simply put, a Shadowverse card is worth more than an Hearthstone card, and you get them more easily.
- expac lifespawn. SV has a new expac every three months, against every four months for HS. I list it as a strict positive, because while it means more cards printed, Cygames is generous enough that it doesn't outrageously disadvantages new players. And more cards more often means more change in the meta, which is a big plus. What's worse than a meta game that is stale during 2 months? A meta-game that is stale during 3 months!
Debatable :
- Lore : HS dips into the Warcraft Lore, which is rich and has been developped through many years and many games. If you love this lore, it's a positive. SV, on the other hand, has its own less detailed and a bit more generic Lore, which is kinda interesting in that it allows for more creativity, kinda, but is less structured (kinda old Magic : the Gathering Lore, a ragtag of interesting ideas and themes that got developped along the line)
- RNG, or lack thereof : Hearthstone has many more RNG elements than SV. It makes the games really different, but it also weakens the importance of skill. To sum it up : HS is more casual than SV. On the flipside, SV is really consistent, but it also means that if your deck is weaker than your opponent's, you will most likely loose, and since everybody can look up online the strongest decklists, it means that deck-building (a form of skill), is less important. All in all, I would still say that SV requires more skill than HS, but it's a bit on the decline since the latest expacs.
The rest is too shaky to make solid points, imo. Shadowverse it still a young game, it's not even one year-old. Some recent changes are a bit worrying, like the fact that each expac will have two legendaries for each craft, but truth is, Hearthstone did it too, and raised (sorry, "adjusted") their prices in most countries aside from the USA and Canada.
In the end, I went with Shadowverse for the economical model. Even though I played World of Warcraft for several years, I wanted to invest in a CCG where I though I could achieve the full collection (aka, one copy of each card) for a reasonable price. After 4 months and spending 155 euros, I'm kinda proud to say that I have the full collection (as in, I could craft all the cards that I miss with my vials), and I will most likely be able to complete the next expac without spending any more money. I'd have to do the calculations, but I suspect that I would have to spend at least three times as much for the same result in Hearthstone (for the same amount of cards)
But gameplay-wise, Gwent wrecks those two games and more, so...
Anyway, good luck in your choice!
Edit : and one Debatable point I forgot : the Art. Up to your taste, some people love/hate SV's art because it's anime, and imo, HS's art is kinda generic, good-looking, but generic.
But SV art is pretty
While myhr2 put a lot of effort into writing this response and all of it is what I'd have said too, I wanna add this tiny little thing.
HS is ♥♥♥♥ and is going downhill, the playerbase is actually shrinking and the amount of RNG is at a level where not even casuals can overlook it anymore. "Pros" are leaving left and right and no company, not even Konami, would do what Blizzard did - raising pack costs while the game itself was at a low and only 1 month away from a new expansion. Let that sink in.
Shadowverse is rising. It will never reach the popularity of HS, but at least you won't ever feel like surrounded by haters.
I played HS for far too long and I'm as sick of it as it gets, so yeah, bias, but what else can I give but my personal impression.
Also gameplay-wise MTG wrecks all games. And Ironclad Tactics.
Immensely.
I got Heartstone and tried it
I finished downloading Shadowverse
Im trying it tonight.
