There is a Tf2-shaped hole in the heart of every gamer which can't be filled by anything else. I'm still holding out hope that Valve will save the franchise by 2040.


My favourite gamemode of all time was dead in 2013, never mind now. Arena mode, which is equivalent to Overwatch's elimination, where you don't respawn until the next round. Payload matches almost never play through past the first half without one team leaving or hackers and bots ruining the match.

The game only receives the barest minimum of updates, as in small tweaks, not actual content. After a massive community effort and social media campaign, they agreed to put some effort into fixing the bot problem, but I am not sure if this happened.

If you find the good servers, you'll quickly run into the problem of the game's insanely high skill ceiling though. The players who stuck around are inhumanly good at this game and will effortlessly destroy you while toying with you. After they realise you have no challenge to offer them, they will go back to "friendly" behaviour, spamming emotes and voice lines etc.

In its current state, I am not sure if I can recommend the game due to the difficulty of finding quality matches and the bot problem. There are also plenty of active community servers, running unofficial gamemodes (I personally got bored of these), though some examples are a player-controlled boss fight mode, a Takeshi's castle style mode, zombie gamemode (which might be dead now.)

I think Tf2 is one of those things where you had to be there in its prime (2008-2013) to fully appreciate it and its impact on gaming and meme culture. Team Fortress 2 is the 80s of PC gaming.

The game is dying and the player count is a lie, between 60 - 80 percent of the player count are bots.
