I started playing this because of a promotion in Rift - you can hit level 20 in Trove and get a mount in Rift. I'm glad I did. The game is a lot of fun - I thought it was going to be the generic Minecraft clone but it isn't.

There's a building component - you have your own "square' that you can make appear anywhere in the world - this is yours to build and design however you like. It does have a size limit - I don't remember off the top of my head but I do wish it was bigger. You're the only one who can build on this plot.

The second building component are the Club Worlds. Clubs are basically guilds. These Club worlds are separate from the main game and you can expand their size and build to your hearts content.

To the gameplay aspect of the game - there are a bunch of classes and you can switch between them on the fly. You're able to get all the classes without paying real money. There are dungeons you can do, and basically the game is like Diablo - you play to get loot so you can get better loot.

There is no end game as of this review. For new players coming in, there is a bit of a learning curve. I don't think the tutorials do a good enough job of explaining the different mechanics to you, and the way they're provided is strange in that you get some higher level tutorials when you're still a low level.

The game is free to play, however I have to say that there is a pay2win component to the game. You can't buy gear directly but you can buy the items that have a random chance of having gear, or allow you to upgrade the gear. That's pretty much par for the course in F2P games. The pay2win component comes in with the alternative leveling system.

Each class has a class level, and then each character has a mastery level. Mastery level gives you bonuses - more potions (Flasks), dps upgrades, etc.. Mastery is obtained a number of ways - leveling up, unlocking new items, etc.. It's the unlocking new items that allow you to level up mastery faster which results in some bonuses to playing (hence the pay2win).

The store prices are overpriced IMO but the items that can only be purchased with real life money are cosmetic and aside from giving mastery points don't provide any benefit.

The servers are having some issues - the game is more popular than expected, and there always seems to be lag in the game.
