[How to!] Use old GFWL savegame in Steamwork version
Tips
Don't mix patched with unpatched savefiles or the game could crash.
I'm using Hex Workshop but here's a free one:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/tiny-hexer-Download-35737.html

Tutorial
  • Open the game and create the number of gfwl-saves you have. Lets say you have 3 gfwl-savegames, create 3 new savegames (fill 3 slots with 0%). Now in savegame folder you should have save0.sgd, save1.sgd, save2.sgd and profile.bin
Profile.bin is the file that remember how many savefiles you have, if the file is missing the game assume that you don't have any savefile, that why you need to create a proper one.
  • Backup C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<userid>\200260\remote
Check below for other posible locations of unpatched savefiles
  • Your GFWL savegame have your GFWL username as prefix.
    <GFWLusername>-save#.sgd
If the savegame is in another location outside steam:
    Steam\userdata\<userid>\<gameid>\remote

Like in My Documents, your savegame not have your gfwl-username as prefix. But you need to patch it.
  • Delete all files EXCLUDING these files: (remember to backup this folder)
    profile.bin and <GFWLusername>-save#.sgd
  • Open with a HEX editor the savefile you want <GFWLusername>-save#.sgd
    Lets say Sharkiller-save0.sgd
  • Search Type HEX
    Image[i.imgur.com] Arkham City: 00 00 00 03 00
Image[i.imgur.com] Arkham Asylum: 00 00 01 The one after text, not the dots.
  • http://i.imgur.com/ZXVqIBu.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/lGQ3Dc8.jpg Select all the text BEFORE the searched text
  • http://i.imgur.com/xsw2GCz.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/JaeBHy3.jpg And delete.
  • Save and remove your gfwl usename prefix from the file. "save0.sgd"
  • Check the patched savegame is in the correct path. (check below)
  • Open the game and you have your working savegame there.

Final location of patched savegames
Arkham City
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<userid>\200260\remote
Arkham Asylum
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<userid>\35140\remote

Another posible locations for your unatched savegames
Arkham City
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<userid>\57400\remote
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<userid>\200260\remote
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\WB Games\Batman Arkham City\SaveData
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\WB Games\Batman Arkham City GOTY\SaveData

Arkham Asylum
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<userid>\35010\remote
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<userid>\35140\remote
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Square Enix\Batman Arkham Asylum\SaveData
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Square Enix\Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY\SaveData

This should be stickied.

Yup, very similar to the method I've used in the past. GOTY just finished downloading for me, so I'm off to test it myself.

Does it work for Asylum?

I managed to get this working, but I'm at 38% rather than 41%.... I was about to enter the Tower, now I'm back to catwomen breaking intot the safe....

Edit: I tried again, and its back to normal!

THANKSSSS!!!!!!!!

Doesn't work for me for some reason. Still getting a crash if I add old save game using this method.

Try another search. I had to do it twice, I had a line with the same hex farther down

Tested and confirmed for AC. It was even simpler than I thought it'd be. All they did was strip the entire header. As a reminder, old save files can be found in one of the following locations:

Retail Edition: C:\Users\username\Documents\WB Games\Batman Arkham City\SaveData\[USERID]
Retail GOTY Edition: C:\Users\username\Documents\WB Games\Batman Arkham City GOTY\SaveData\
Steam Regular Edition: ..\Steam\userdata\[USERID]\57400
Steam GOTY Edition: ..\Steam\userdata\[USERID]\200260

I believe Origin is basically the retail edition, so if you have that check the retail folders.

I should also mention that they've effectively gotten rid of save encryption, and it should now be possible to use other people's saves. In case anyone has misplaced or overwritten their saves, I do have a few backups that I made:

save0 - Complete Side Missions (Challenges, New Game+ left to be done)
save0 - Complete Challenges (New Game+ left to be done)

What are you using to open this file? Notepad++?

You'll have to use a Hex editor. The OP recommended Hex Workshop, but I prefer Tiny Hexer because it's smaller and free-er: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Miscellaneous/tiny-hexer.shtml
